Trafford Rowing Club is inviting spectators to a special time trial event later this month involving around 150 crews from across the region.

The Trafford ‘Head of the Bridgewater’, which will take place on Saturday 24th February, is a 3.2km time trial event where boats will set off at short intervals, covering the course as quickly as possible.

As the canal is very narrow in places, it’s set to make for some great racing.

The course starts between the Budenberg Apartments and Oldfield Keys Marina in Altrincham before coming underneath the A56 bridge at Broadheath, continuing through under the Park Road Bridge at Timperley and finishing at the club’s boathouse in Walton Park, Sale. The quickest teams will cover the distance in around 10 minutes.

In addition to the racing, Trafford Rowing club, now in its 71st year, will be hosting a barbeque at its clubhouse and there will be a cake stall and drinks available in the Scout Hut in Walton Park.

Simon Reeves, chairman of Trafford Rowing Club, said: “Historically rowing was not seen as a sport for everyone, but we want to show everyone that isn’t the case.

“The recent successes Team GB have had have propelled the sport into the mainstream and our membership is higher than ever. As a club we do take our racing seriously but we don’t take ourselves too seriously that we lose the friendly atmosphere in the club.

“The Trafford Head is a great opportunity for people to come and see what the club is all about and find out more about joining us.

“Even if you have no interest in joining the club the barbeque, cakes and atmosphere will make for a great day out in the sunshine (fingers crossed!).”
