Firefighters spent three hours battling a grassland blaze off Sinderland Road this afternoon as Altrincham became the latest place in Greater Manchester to witness a heatwave-related fire.

Two engines from Moss Side Fire Station were called to the incident – which happened close to Sinderland Road and only a couple of hundred yards from the Household Waste Recycling Centre – at 2.28pm.

The fire covered a total area of 10,000m – bigger than a football pitch – and flames were seen to reach well up a number of conifers at the edge of the patch of grassland.

The second of the two engines left the scene at 5.30pm after successfully extinguishing the fire.

It’s not yet known exactly what caused the blaze.
