Over 1,300 young people took to the streets of Timperley and Altrincham today for the annual Wellington School sponsored walk.
Having raised over £80,000 for good causes during its 80th year last year, students decided that all funds raised this time would stay firmly within the community.
Student Oliver Donnelly said: “Our School Council decided that eight local charities should be put forward as the recipients of this year’s fund-raising.
“Every student voted and there were two clear winners – Pictor Academy, a special school for children with a range of learning difficulties – and Timperley Amateur Boxing Club, which is based on the Broomwood estate and does so much good work with local children and adults.”
Representatives of both were on hand to lend support during the day.
Mark Davison, of Timperley Amateur Boxing Club, said: “We have great links with Wellington School. Many students benefit from the use of our gym and an ex-pupil, Clark Smith, has just been crowned English national champion. Every penny raised today will be used to provide the people of this area with the facilities they deserve.”
Headteacher of Pictor Academy, Jacqui Wheble, who joined the walk with a number of pupils from Pictor, added: “Today has been the most wonderful event. Community spirit and the generosity of Wellington students will help to pay for a sensory garden at Pictor and will have such a positive effect on the lives of our pupils.”
The walk is now in its 21st year and over half a million pounds has been raised for good causes in that time.
Deputy Head at Wellington, Liz Copeland, added: “It is fantastic to be able to support such important organisations right on our own doorstep and I am sure that our links with Pictor and TABC will last long into the future.”
