Sir Graham Brady has confirmed he is considering standing to be Theresa May’s successor as Prime Minister.
The 52-year-old, who has represented Altrincham and Sale West since 1997, has today stood down as chairman of the powerful 1922 committee.
Suspicions were first raised when his name did not appear on a Conservative Party statement about the forthcoming leadership contest following May’s announcement earlier today that she would be resigning on June 7th.
The statement said that party chairman Brandon Lewis MP, Dame Cheryl Gillan MP and Charles Walker MP would be responsible for arranging the contest, not Brady, who would normally have been expected to have played a central role.
And now it’s been confirmed that Brady is indeed considering standing in the contest to replace May.
He said: “I have made the decision to stand down as chair of the 1922 committee in order to ensure a fair and transparent election process.
“I am considering the approaches I have received and will make a decision in due course.”
He remains a long shot for the top job, but is well-liked in his party and would be seen as a safe pair of hands.
Brady held his seat at the 2017 general election with 26,933 votes, but with a reduced majority over Labour’s Andrew Western on 20,507 votes.
