A 24-year-old man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of an attack at a Timperley pub that left a former friend with 20 stitches in his face.
Jordan Whittaker was at the Moss Trooper on Moss Lane on March 24th last year when he glassed Jack Allen, leaving him with two gashes on his face.
At Bolton Crown Court, Duncan Wilcock, prosecuting, said that Whittaker had been out celebrating on the eve of his 23rd birthday.
Allen, a former friend of Whittaker’s, had not been invited to the celebration and approached the table where Whittacker’s party was seated and became involved in an argument.
Later in the evening, Whittaker sought Allen out and, after picking up a glass or bottle, punched Allen six or seven times, with the glass shattering in his face.
In a statement read out in court, Allen said: “I am embarrassed that I was assaulted by an associate in front of my friends. I wonder what would have happened if the wound has been a couple of centimetres to the side, that it would have hit my eye.
“I really don’t understand why this has happened as there was no reason for Jordan to hit me in the face with a glass.”
Robert Lancaster, defending, called the attack “30 seconds of madness” and pointed out that Whittaker had no previous convictions and was remorseful.
Judge Graeme Smith said there had been a “high degree of provocation” from Allen and that “much of what happened that night was affected by alcohol to a greater or lesser extent.
He did however say that Whittaker’s actions were “completely over the top”..
Whittaker, of Downham Chase in Timperley, admitted causing grievous bodily harm. He was handed a 16-month sentence, suspended for a year, and was also ordered to undertake 240 hours of unpaid work, participate in 15 days of rehabilitation activities and pay £1,000 compensation to the victim.
