Michael Oglesby CBE, the Bowdon-based founder of North West property company Bruntwood, has died at the age of 80.
Oglesby passed away peacefully surrounded by his close family. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Jean, and children Chris and Kate.
Born in Scunthorpe, Oglesby founded Bruntwood in 1970 and built it into one of the UK’s most successful property businesses.
The company now owns in excess of 120 buildings in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham, comprising approximately 8,800,000 sq ft with a value in excess of £1 billion. In Manchester city centre, Bruntwood owns approximately 20% of the commercial office space.
Bruntwood owns Station House in Altrincham town centre and recently agreed a £50million deal with Trafford Council to acquire the Stamford Quarter shopping centre and Clarendon House on Stamford New Road.
His son Chris succeeded him as CEO of Bruntwood in 1998 and his daughter Kate works in the business and has recently taken over as Chair of the Oglesby Charitable Trust (OCT). To date it has donated in excess of £16 million to over 300 charities.
He was awarded the CBE in the January 2011 Honours List for his services to Industry and Charity, and has also been High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and Vice Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
