Former Altrincham FC player Jordan Sinnott has died after being assaulted in the early hours of this morning.
Sinnott was found unconscious in Retford in Nottinghamshire at about 2am on Saturday after police were called to a large-scale fight at a pub car park in the town.
The 25-year-old, who has been on loan at Matlock Town from Alfreton Town, had suffered a fractured skull. He was placed into a coma but his death was announced this evening by Matlock Town, after their away game against Mickleover Sports was postponed.
Sinnott, the son of former Robins manager Lee Sinnott, made a total of 57 appearances for Altrincham between 2014 and 2016.
A statement from Matlock Town read: “We are very sorry to report that Jordan Sinnott has passed away just before 7pm this evening.
“His family and friends were with him at his bedside and we send our sincere condolences to them all at this very sad time.
“We understand from the Police that following a serious assault in Retford town centre yesterday evening Jordan was found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull.
“He was taken to hospital where he was treated for the injuries and put on a life support machine.
“The news that his condition was very serious and he was on a life support machine was received as players arrived for the game at Mickleover and after discussion with the Players, League and Mickleover it was agreed that the match should be postponed to a future date.
“All of the Matlock Town players and Officials returned to the Club House at Matlock.”
Sinnott also played for Huddersfield Town, Bury, Halifax and Chesterfield. Earlier this month he had scored the first hat-trick of his career in a game against Basford United.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
Det Insp Wilson, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our detectives are continuing their enquiries to understand how three men came to sustain their injuries.
“This incident happened at a very busy time and we believe there are still a number of witnesses who have still not come forward.”
