Market Dave, one of Altrincham’s best-known characters, has died.

Real name Dave O’Kell, Dave was a familiar face to generations of Altrincham residents as a scrap collector.

He was often seen pushing his handcart along the town’s roads and calling out to drivers and pedestrians.

Tragically, his time in Altrincham was brought to a premature end in April 2008 when he was attacked and seriously injured.

He was found unconscious on Huxley Street in Broadheath but Dave was unable to recall what had happened. No-one was charged in relation to the attack.

The incident left Dave unable to talk and he spent a considerable time at a rehabilitation centre in Haydock.

Dave was a regular sight around Altrincham Market for decades

Dave, who was brought up and went to school in the Altrincham area, spent his final years in a care home.

He was in his early 80s.

Dave’s death was confirmed on Facebook by his nephew, Paul Lomax, who said: “Yes this correct and sad news. RIP Uncle David.”
