Manchester Airport has insisted that there has not been an increase in the number of planes flying over the Altrincham area, despite reports from residents.
Local residents have contacted us to claim they’ve noticed a significant uptick in planes flying over Altrincham, with a resulting impact on noise and air pollution.
One tweeter, @E5me1282, said: “Why are so many more Manchester Airport flights flying over South Manchester than previously esp at take off and landing when most polluting. Used to fly south of Airport – only a couple of flights a week over Timps.”
Another Timperley-based resident contacted us to say she had noticed a “huge increase” in flights over her house.
She said: “I live parallel to Manchester Airport runways and have noticed a huge increase of flights over my house in Timperley. Is this due to the project of re-routing flights?
“I live very near the airport and am concerned about the pollution over the populated area as opposed to flying over farmland south of the airport.”
We contacted Manchester Airport to find out – but they insisted that “nothing has changed or been re-routed”.
The spokesperson added: “All it will be is at this time of year the wind tends to below in the other direction meaning we’ve been taking off and landing in different directions. Happens a lot this time of year as we edge out of summer and into autumn.
“Couple that with the good weather (more people outside/windows open) and the first restriction-free summer for travel means people naturally will notice more flights given we’ve had very little for two years.”
