A petition has been launched to save Altrincham Town Hall, which Trafford Council is looking to sell off to raise funds.
The Market Street town hall, which officially opened in 1901, is among seven plots listed as suitable for disposal or lease by Trafford Council.
It follows a review earlier this year of the council’s strategic land review programme.
The town hall is currently used as a community facility for different interest groups as well as a base for meetings and other events. Part of the building is also leased to Juice Nursery.
It’s also the only place in Altrincham town centre with a wedding licence, and frequently hosts nuptial ceremonies.
Altrincham Town Hall was designed in the Jacobean style by the Manchester architect C H Hindle and extended in 1930 by F H Brazier.
After the creation of Trafford Metropolitan Council in 1974, the administrative business of Altrincham was gradually transferred to Trafford Town Hall.
Altrincham Town Hall was closed for refurbishment in 2005 and re-opened after an extensive programme of works in 2006.
A spokesperson for Trafford Council said its Executive would decide on the town hall’s future next month.
A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We are reviewing the use of our buildings to ensure we are getting the best value for them and reducing costs.
“The Executive will meet in January to decide on next steps with regards to Altrincham Town Hall.”
