The Pavilion Hale has closed "until further notice", little more than a year after it finally opened its doors.
In a public notice posted on social media, the team behind the café and events space said it would shut from 3pm on Friday 31st July.
"Dear customers & friends," the notice read. "It is with great regret we have to announce that The Pavilion Hale will be closed until further notice from Friday 31st July at 3pm. We would like to thank you for your custom & friendship."
No reason was given for the closure, and it is not yet clear whether it is permanent.
The Pavilion - home to a café and meeting rooms, with the café run by Nick Banks of Altrincham restaurant Francs - opened on 17th May 2025, meaning it has traded for just 14 months. Its launch had itself been long delayed, coming some 18 months after the new Hale Library opened in the same building in November 2023.
Regulars were quick to express their sadness at the news. "Such a shame, we loved the coffee, breakfasts and ambience of the Pavilion," wrote one on Instagram. Another added: "We have enjoyed your wonderful meals, ambiance and friendship. We will miss you so much."
The closure is the latest chapter in a long-running saga for the former bowling pavilion site on Cecil Road.
Plans for a new 6,000 sq ft community centre and library on the site of the old Hale Village Bowling Pavilion were approved by Trafford Council in 2019, the culmination of a five-year campaign led by the Hale Community Trust to guarantee the future of library services in the village.
As well as the first-floor library, the building was designed to include a community café and event space, a lounge for bowling club members and a dedicated space for a seniors' group.
But the project has been beset by delays at every stage – and the Pavilion's closure now leaves a question mark over the community-facing heart of the building once again.
