Trafford is set to receive almost £5 million towards repairing potholes and resurfacing roads – although the full list of Altrincham roads to benefit has yet to be confirmed.
The borough has been allocated £4.992m from a new £60m Greater Manchester Pothole Fund, announced last week by Greater Manchester Mayor Bev Craig.
Trafford Council says the additional money will allow it to carry out more than 20 resurfacing schemes, alongside more than £1m of patching and surface treatments on roads requiring repair.
So far, Lloyd Street in Altrincham is among a small number of roads identified for resurfacing, with work planned on sub-sections of the road.
However, the council has not yet published the full programme of roads and locations that will benefit from the new funding, meaning further Altrincham schemes could be included when the details are finalised.
Other roads already named include Lostock Road and Broadway in Davyhulme and Urmston, Old Hall Road in Sale Moor and Talbot Road in Old Trafford.
Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, welcomed the additional funding.
He said: “We welcome this extra funding. This year, we have allocated more than £7m – the most money ever – to spend on repairs and maintenance of our highways.
“The extra money from the GMCA will enable us to go ahead with more than 20 resurfacing schemes, as well as spending over £1m of patching and surface treatments on roads that need repair.”
Patching work is expected to begin later this month, removing and replacing deteriorated sections of road to prevent further damage.
The resurfacing programme is due to begin in spring, after the winter months. The work will include preventative treatments designed to seal road surfaces, improve skid resistance and prevent water getting underneath and causing further deterioration.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said: “This is great news and will support us even further in protecting our roads and making them safer for the public.”
The £60m Greater Manchester-wide fund is expected to pay for repairs and maintenance covering more than one million square metres of roads and pavements – equivalent to around 125km.
Bev Craig, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “Keeping our roads and pavements safe and well maintained is essential for a growing city region like Greater Manchester. That’s why I promised to create this new Pothole Fund that will benefit drivers and everyone who uses our roads to get around.”
The funding remains subject to approval by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority later this month.
Trafford Council says further updates will be provided as the details of the programme are finalised.
