A former children's nursery in Hale is to be converted into a 24-hour respite centre for young people with additional needs.
Trafford Council has granted planning permission for BeKind Care Ltd to transform the former Honeybear Nursery at 160-160A Moss Lane, close to the junction with Sandileigh Avenue.
The facility will provide planned and emergency short breaks and overnight care for up to five children and young people under the age of 18.
It will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the applicant describing it as a "home from home" for children with additional needs.
The plans attracted objections from 10 neighbouring households and were called in for consideration by Trafford's Planning and Development Management Committee by a local councillor over parking and highways concerns.
Residents also raised concerns about potential noise and disturbance from the round-the-clock operation, including staff shift changes, professional and family visits, deliveries and vehicle movements during evenings and overnight.
However, the council's report noted that objectors did not oppose the principle of providing specialist respite care for vulnerable children, with concerns instead focused on the operation and potential intensity of the use.
Trafford Children's Services supported the proposal, telling planners there was "a high demand for local overnight respite" and that the new centre would help address a gap in provision.
It added that BeKind was already known to the service and had a "strong record in supporting children with additional needs".
According to planning documents, the centre will provide short breaks for children with a range of learning disabilities and needs, including autism, attachment difficulties and social communication difficulties.
Children will be supervised according to individual care plans and risk assessments, with external activities supervised by staff.
The applicant said activity would reduce during the evening, with quiet hours typically observed from around 8pm. Around five staff are expected to be present during the day and evening, with approximately three overnight.
The premises were previously used by Honeybear Nursery, which at the time of its last Ofsted inspection in 2017 provided childcare for 55 children with 10 members of staff between 7.30am and 6.30pm on weekdays. The building is now vacant.
Council planning officers concluded that the new facility would provide a "significant social benefit" by offering specialist respite accommodation for children and young people with care needs.
Their report said it would meet an identified need for overnight respite in Trafford, support vulnerable young people and their families and bring a vacant building back into use.
