Timperley councillor and former Mayor of Trafford Jane Brophy has been selected as the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Altrincham and Sale West.
Brophy, who represents Timperley North on Trafford Council, will contest the seat currently held by Labour MP Connor Rand.
It will be a return to the ballot paper in the constituency for Brophy, who also stood for the Liberal Democrats at the 2024 General Election.
On that occasion, Rand won the seat with 20,798 votes, ahead of Conservative candidate Oliver Carroll on 16,624. Brophy finished fourth with 4,727 votes, behind Reform UK's Paul Swansborough.
A long-serving Trafford councillor, Brophy has also served as Mayor of Trafford and was a Member of the European Parliament for North West England from 2019 until the UK left the European Union in January 2020.
She has a professional background in healthcare and worked as an NHS dietitian, including as a diabetes dietitian at Wythenshawe Hospital.
Speaking after her selection, Brophy said: “It is an enormous honour to be selected to represent the Liberal Democrats in Altrincham and Sale West.
“This is my home, and I care deeply about the people and communities that make our area such a special place to live.
“Too many people feel let down by a Labour Government that is failing to deliver the change it promised, while the Conservatives have left behind a damaging legacy after years of taking our area for granted.
“I will campaign for an improved NHS, better social care services, properly funded local services, action on the cost of living and the protection of our green spaces.
“Most importantly, I will listen to residents and work hard for every part of Altrincham and Sale West. People deserve an MP who is visible, accessible and firmly on their side.”
Councillor Shaun Ennis, leader of the Trafford Liberal Democrat group, said Brophy had a “strong record of public service and a real understanding of our communities”.
