We're well into the new school term and many children and parents alike will be noticing adult teeth coming through and wondering whether they will need braces. Dr Sam Hainsworth, Principal Dentist at Smile Stylist in Hale Barns, and Dr Richard Needham, orthodontic specialist at the clinic, explain what to look out for and when it's worth seeking professional advice.
One of the most common questions parents ask us is: "Should I be concerned about how my child's teeth are coming through?"
As adult teeth come through, the following are completely normal:
- front teeth initially appear a little large, out of place and can be tipped in different positions due to the position of the unerupted teeth (often termed the "ugly duckling stage")
- some spacing between the teeth is normal
- slight overlapping of the teeth can also occur (in most cases, this should still allow for thorough brushing with an adequate technique)
These factors can often self-correct but it remains vitally important for your child to see the dentist at least every six months to allow for early intervention when appropriate.
Examples that would be of greater concern include:
- severe crowding with no room for the adult teeth to grow into
- pain or difficulties chewing or biting properly due to misalignment
- an "underbite" or "crossbite" where the top teeth do not overlap the bottom teeth correctly
- an "open-bite" where there is a gap between the front teeth, usually due to an ongoing or previous thumb sucking habit
- delayed eruption of adult teeth (for example, your child's teeth appear to be coming through later than his or her peers)
What often surprises parents is that visiting the orthodontist early doesn't automatically mean braces.

If you are at all worried about how your child's teeth are developing, do not spend months worrying and researching online, seek specialist advice sooner rather than later. It is never too early to seek an orthodontic opinion, but delaying may rule out certain options.
