Police have confirmed they have arrested two men in connection with the “senseless” murder of Rico Burton as they provided more details about the double stabbing in Goose Green this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3am this morning and found two males, a 17-year-old and a 31-year-old, with stab wounds.

They were receiving first aid from members of the public before officers and paramedics reached the scene.

Both were taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where tragically the 31-year-old man – now confirmed to be Rico Burton, a cousin of heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury – passed away.

The 17-year-old remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Speaking at a press conference outside Altrincham Police Station this afternoon, Superintendent Ben Ewart from Greater Manchester Police said: “Firstly, may I take this opportunity to pass on my sincere condolences the family and friends of Rico at the very difficult time.

“I would like to commend members of the public who were at the scene, who administered first aid prior to the emergency services arrival.

“Greater Manchester Police have launched a Murder investigation and specialist officers are supporting the victim’s family.

“A 21-year-old male was arrested at the scene and a 20-year-old male was arrested later this morning, both of whom remain in custody.

“This was a senseless act and both victims should have returned home this morning after enjoying a night out with friends.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was at the popular night spot of Goose Green in Altrincham overnight or who may have information in connection with this incident. Any photographs, videos or CCTV footage would also be extremely valuable in aiding our investigations.

“I urge anyone who was out with the victims or suspects who have not yet come forward, to please do so.

“We have increased police patrols in the area and tackling knife crime remains a priority for Greater Manchester Police – the devastating effects of which have been demonstrated today.”

The whole of Goose Green has been cordoned off as a murder investigation gets underway

Superintendent Ewart said that “everything suggests at this stage” that the victim was simply “enjoying an evening out with friends… this has taken place spontaneously and unplanned – it’s a very tragic ending to what should have been a good night out with friends”.

The whole of the Goose Green area was cordoned off for most of the day as forensic experts conducted a thorough investigation of the scene.

Two blue forensics tents were set up on the paved area of the popular night spot.
