An investigation is underway after after a person died in "unexplained" circumstances after a vehicle fire in Altrincham this afternoon.
Emergency services were called out to reports of a vehicle on fire at the end of Atlantic Street, close to the Trans Pennine Trail car park, at around 3pm.
It's now been confirmed that a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Greater Manchester Police say that enquiries are in their "early stages" and that officers "are keeping an open mind" about the incident.
A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 3.30pm today (Thursday 12 October), police were called to Atlantic Street in Altrincham by GMFRS to reports of an unexplained death.
"Emergency services attended and a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is in its early stages and officers are keeping an open mind about the circumstances whilst enquiries continue."
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: "Just after 3pm this afternoon (Thursday 12th October), one fire engine from Altrincham fire station was called to reports of a vehicle fire on Atlantic Street, Altrincham.
“The crew arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire. Firefighters have been in attendance for around two hours and are still at the scene.”
