Withington Girls' School is opening a new chapter in its history with a landmark change to its admissions policy that promises to transform the educational journey for its youngest pupils.
From now on, girls who join the Junior School will be guaranteed a place in the Senior School - named the top independent secondary school in the Northwest for Academic Excellence - marking a significant shift for the prestigious independent school and offering families the reassurance of a seamless educational pathway through to sixth form.
Mrs Ellie Clark, Head of Junior School, described the decision as both a vote of confidence in every pupil and a way to reduce unnecessary pressure on young girls.
"We're now proud to offer a seamless, continuous journey into the Senior School," she said. "Girls who join us in the Junior School will be offered a place. This affirms our confidence in each pupil, and families can feel reassured knowing their daughter's journey will continue in a familiar, supportive environment.”

It's a move that means once a pupil joins Withington, they will be part of the community for the long term.
Year 6 pupils will still sit an entrance exam, but the results will be used for internal assessment and curriculum planning only.
"It helps us understand each girl's progress and share insights with Senior School colleagues,” added Mrs Clark. “Our Year 6 pupils and their families will still have the opportunity to meet Senior School staff. These warm, celebratory meetings will confirm progression and begin building relationships.”
Mrs Clark emphasised that academic achievement, whilst important, was only part of the Withington story.
"We take a well-rounded approach. Every girl is known as an individual and wellbeing is central to our ethos," she said. "We foster resilience, kindness and confidence through enrichment opportunities and programmes like Girls on Board."
For families considering Withington for their daughter's early education, Mrs Clark's advice is straightforward: "Visit us! The atmosphere here is something special. Our Junior School offers a nurturing, stimulating environment where girls are supported and challenged. With exceptional teaching, fantastic facilities and a broad curriculum, we help each child discover her strengths and develop a lifelong love of learning. By Year 6, our pupils are confident, curious and ready for their next stage with us.”
Assessments for Junior School entry take place in January 2026. Families interested in learning more can contact Admissions on 0161 249 3371 or admissions@wgs.org to arrange a personal tour.
