Altrincham looks set to get another supermarket after Farmfoods lodged an application to open a new 10,000 sq ft store.
The frozen food giant, which will celebrate its 70th anniversary in July, has more than 340 stores around the UK.
And it is now planning to move into the former B&Q unit off Atlantic Street on the Atlantic Street Retail Park, which since 2018 has been occupied by United Carpets.
An application filed with Trafford Council this week seeks permission to redevelop the unit and in so doing, create between 15 and 20 new jobs.
Farmfoods previously operated a smaller store in Sale but closed it in 2021.
It has recently sought to find larger available units with car parks attached.
According to a planning statement prepared by Gravis Planning, Atlantic Street Retail Park provides Farmfoods with “an ideal opportunity to provide a modern store appropriate for the needs of north/west Altrincham town which has the added benefit that it is located in a defined Retail Park within the town”.
As well as frozen food, Farmfoods also sells long shelf life groceries, chilled foods, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, pet food, household and personal care products.
United Carpets took over the unit from B&Q, which closed in 2016. Part of the former hardware store was demolished to make way for Aldi in 2019.
