Poundland to close Altrincham store after just eight months

The discount retailer had taken over the former Wilko unit last October.

Poundland is to close its Altrincham store next month - just eight months after opening.

The discount retailer took over the former Wilko unit on George Street in the Stamford Quarter last October after Wilko went into administration.

It had closed a store at the other end of George Street in early 2023, and now signs have gone up confirming that the new store will also be closing.

The signs simply say: "Sorry. We're closing 17th June. Visit our website for other nearby stores."

A spokesperson for Poundland said the company had been unable to agree a new lease with the landlord.

He said: "Sadly we’ve been unable to agree lease terms that would enable us to keep the store trading. The store’s is currently planned to close on 17 June.

"Whenever we have to close a store, it goes without saying we do all we can to find alternative roles for colleagues."

The retailer had given priority to Wilko workers when hiring new staff for the shop.

Footfall to the store - which was located close to the new Lane7 entertainment complex - will not have been helped by the recent closure of the Interchange gateway to allow for the Foundation redevelopment work.

A spokesperson for Bruntwood and Trafford Council said: “Unfortunately Poundland couldn’t make it work in the Stamford Quarter and will close from 17th June.

“We are currently in talks with other brands to be part of the high street offering here in Stamford Quarter and will share updates as soon as we can."
