Long-standing Carpetright store at Altrincham Retail Park to close

It's been on the site for more than 15 years.

It's been confirmed that Carpetright's store at Altrincham Retail Park is to close.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Carpetright had filed an intent to appoint administrators after a slump in sales in recent months.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been working on finding a buyer while the company scrambled to find extra funding.

Now rival flooring retailer Tapi has bought the Carpetright brand name, the company's intellectual property, two warehouses and 54 stores, saving 308 jobs.

But it said that taking over all sites and warehouses was "unviable" - meaning the Altrincham store will now close with a number of staff set to be made redundant.

Carpetright has had a store on the George Richards Way site for more than 15 years.

More than 200 other stores, including one at Trafford Retail Park, will also be shutting.

Jeevan Karir, Tapi's managing director, said: "Our goal, initially, was to try to save all of Carpetright.

"However, as we looked into the details, we established that saving the entire business was unviable."

In a statement on Monday, PwC said that administrators were working with affected employees to ensure they receive the payments they are entitled to as soon as possible.

Zelf Jussain, joint administrator at PwC, acknowledged it was a "difficult time" for those affected.

"The sale of some stores and the brand to Tapi has allowed over 300 jobs to be saved, and gives the Carpetright brand the chance to continue and flourish under its new ownership," he said.

“However, it is deeply saddening that for the remainder of the workforce there will be redundancies. We are committed to helping those affected and will make sure redundancy claims are processed as quickly as possible."
