Mountain Warehouse to open first Greater Manchester store in former Debenhams unit in Altrincham

Another big new arrival for Altrincham town centre.

Mountain Warehouse is to open in Altrincham town centre, its first store in Greater Manchester.

The fast-growing outdoor retailer is to open a 20,710 sq ft store in the former Debenhams unit on George Street.

This is a huge coup for Altrincham as the Stamford Quarter unit has been vacant since Debenhams closed its doors in January 2020.

A total of 13 new jobs will be created by the new opening.

Mountain Warehouse will be opening in Altrincham this autumn

Due to open this autumn, the new store will stock clothing, footwear, equipment and kidswear including rain jackets, walking boots and ski wear.

It will also stock products from British coastal lifestyle brand Animal.

Mountain Warehouse joins the likes of Parasol, Utility, Gift & Home, Flannels and Sostrene Grene in the Stamford Quarter.

James Tootle, Head of Retail and Leisure at Bruntwood said: “The arrival of Mountain Warehouse is a great addition to the Stamford Quarter and Greater Manchester and perfectly complements the existing retailers in the area.

"The brand stocks everything families need for their next outdoor adventure and we are delighted that they have chosen Altrincham for the location of their first big opening in the area. It will sit alongside independent and national brands and will attract even more visitors to our growing community.”

A Mountain Warehouse spokesperson added: “We’re delighted to be opening our new store in the Stamford Quarter, and excited to share our passion for adventure and great value outdoor gear for all the family, even the dog!”

Councillor Liz Patel, Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration at Trafford Council, commented: “I’m thrilled Mountain Warehouse, another high profile business, has chosen Altrincham’s Stamford Quarter as their new home.

"Mountain Warehouse joins the growing roster of businesses taking up residence in the Stamford Quarter, joining names like Lane 7, Starbucks and Nell’s Pizza.”

Mountain Warehouse recently revealed it was planning to open another 50 stores globally, taking its total to around 370 in nine countries.

Larger sites have become a target for the company - founded by Mark Neale in 1997 - after it developed a much larger oriduct range during the pandemic.

The retailer reported record revenues of £386m for the year to February 2024, with pre-tax profits of £26.2m.
