The proposed closure of Vicarage Lane Post Office will have a "significant impact" on residents in Bowdon Vale, local councillors have said.
The Post Office has confirmed to Altrincham Today that the branch - which is located within the Co-op convenience store - is due to close in February after the current operator resigned.
Altrincham and Sale West MP Connor Rand says he is "extremely disappointed" with the decision and has requested an "urgent meeting with Co-op to discuss my concerns".
Bowdon’s Conservative councillors - Cllr Lisa Hancock, Dr Shengke Zhi and Phil Eckersley - have also expressed concerns about the loss of a service that they say "appears to be well used".
They said: "We have spoken with residents of Dunham Massey and Hale Barns, who travel to use the Bowdon Vale Post Office due to its accessibility.
"In discussions with residents regarding the closure - many of whom were previously unaware - there has been unanimous agreement that losing this community asset would have a significant impact.
"As councillors, we are working closely with the Co-op and the Post Office to seek an alternative location within Bowdon Vale, ensuring that residents can continue to access this vital local service close to their doorstep."
A spokesperson for the Post Office told us that the vacancy to operate the Post Office was currently advertised on its website, and that it would "welcome interest from local retailers".
In the interim, the spokesperson added, the nearest Post Office was in Hale or a new Drop & Collect service at Local Mart on Railway Street in Altrincham, which opened today.
“This model of branch does allow customers the ability to pay bills, drop off prepaid mail and is also a location where they can have mail items delivered, which they can then collect at a more convenient time for them.
"So, whilst it would not be a direct replacement, it may be convenient for some customers.”
