An Altrincham jewellers, believed to be the longest-running shop in the town, has closed its doors for the final time.
L Ellis, on Regent Road, was opened in 1944 by watchmaker Lawrence Ellis and his wife Edith.
Their daughter, Pauline Rodgers, but known locally as 'Miss Ellis', has now decided it is time to shut up shop - at the age of 88.
Pauline took over the Regent Road shop in 1974, making her certainly the longest-running shop owner in Altrincham.
Over that time she has become something of a legend to her loyal band of customers.
Walking inside was like stepping back in time, while the shop's signage remained steadfastly untouched over the decades.
As well as the retail side of the business, Pauline offered an extensive - and very good value - repair service.
One customer of over 30 years, Angela Prior, said: "I'm sure a lot of people will be very sad to hear the news - she was a piece of old Altrincham.
"I've had clocks, watches and rings repaired by her over the years and always received exceptional service. You always knew it would be safe with Miss Ellis.
"She was quiet but very nice, with her own system of working that never changed in all the years I went in. She will be greatly missed."
Her sons, Ian and Colin, have been helping to clear out the family shop this weekend before the lease expires tomorrow.
Ian told us: "She's thought about retiring before but she loved the shop too much.
"It's got to the stage now where she thinks it's the right time. But she is going to miss it hugely."
