Tributes have been paid to a former Manchester City youth team player and student at Wellington School in Timperley, who has died suddenly at the age of just 17.

Jeremy Wisten, who moved from Malawi to the UK when he was a baby, played at Altrincham Juniors before signing for City’s Under-13 Elite Squad four years ago, and he was regarded as a promising central defender.

“The Manchester City family are saddened to learn of the passing of former Academy player Jeremy Wisten,” a statement read.

“We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.”

And Wellington School in Timperley, where Jeremy had been a pupil, posted its tribute.

“The thoughts and prayers of the Wellington community are with the family and friends of former student and Man City academy player Jeremy Wisten, who has tragically passed away. May he rest in peace,” the school posted on Twitter.

City stars Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte were among those to offer their support on Twitter.

And Tyrhys Dolan, a fellow Man City youth team player who now plays for Blackburn Rovers, posted an emotional tribute.

“The pain is indescribable I can’t believe I’m writing this message, I can’t Thank you enough for giving me the best times of my life,” he said.

“Always been a brother to me and I will carry on your legacy forever! RIP bro see you on the other side.”
