In their final game of the season Altrincham prepare to take on Torquay United at the J Davidson Stadium at 12:30pm.
Whatever the result, Altrincham are set to finish 17th in the National League. A win against 2nd placed Torquay would put the Robins’ points tally to 49.
Fans will inevitably have mixed feelings about this season. The Robins initially got off to a slow start, sitting 21st in the division after eight games. But a series of good results, including surprise away wins against Wrexham and Torquay, moved the Robins up to the lofty heights of fourth place.
Many started to dream Altrincham could cement a play-off place in their first season back in the National League. Alas, it was not to be after a poor run of form since mid-February caused Parkinson’s men to slide down the table.
Recent signs have been encouraging however, after picking up four points from their two last games.
Having taken a 2-0 lead at half-time to then trail 3-2 in the 75th minute, the Robins last Saturday beat Yeovil Town 4-3 in the dying embers of the game. And on Tuesday night, Altrincham came from behind again to draw 1-1 against Eastleigh, who prior to midweek had won their previous three matches.
A major problem for Parkinson’s men has been their lack of a goalscoring threat. Altrincham’s highest scoring player, Josh Hancock, has only netted 12 times this season.
Defensively Altrincham have been reasonably solid, having leaked 60 goals over 41 games.
Next season is likely to be one of the most important in Altrincham’s recent history. Parkinson, who will be crowned Altrincham’s first ever full-time manager come July, has stressed he wants to push the club to new heights. This is likely to entail major structural changes across the club.
