Former Altrincham resident John Stubbs is to carry the Team GB flag at today’s Tokyo Paralympics opening ceremony.
Stubbs, who is Team GB’s oldest athlete at the Games, is the nation’s most successful Paralympic archer ever, having won individual gold at Beijing and silver in the mixed team event in Rio 2016.
Now aged 56, the Paralympic veteran will fly the flag alongside swimmer and eight-time medallist Ellie Simmonds.
Competing in his fourth Games to date, Stubbs will feature in both the men’s compound and the mixed team compound events.
According to the Sky Sports website, Stubbs – who hails from Altrincham but now lives with his family in North Wales – said he felt “incredibly emotional” when he was told he would be a flag-bearer.
As the rights holders Channel 4 will be broadcasting the opening ceremony which will take place at the 68,000 capacity Japan National Stadium.
Spectators are barred from watching the event live as Japan is still in a national state of emergency due to soaring rates of Covid-19.
