Hale residents petition Trafford Council over "dangerous" junction with no pedestrian crossing

The petition has reached almost 1,000 signatures in less than a week.

The junction of Hale Road, Delahays Road and Park Road

A petition calling for a pedestrian crossing at a busy Hale junction is approaching 1,000 signatures in less than a week.

The petition, launched on Sunday, urges Trafford Council to install a controlled crossing at the junction of Hale Road, Delahays Road and Park Road, where campaigners say pedestrians are forced to take their chances between traffic light phases.

There is currently no crossing or dropped kerbs at the junction, despite it being a key route into Hale village and to Hale Croft Park – and one used daily by children walking to nearby schools including St Ambrose.

"There is currently no pedestrian crossing and whenever someone tries to cross the road, they risk their life," said Nuala O'Neill, the Hale resident behind the petition.

"You'll also see in the comments a video note from a local 78-year-old lady who can't get to the library safely with her husband due to having to cross this road. Not forgetting the huge number of school children at local school St Ambrose – that's before we think about the runners and the parents and carers who have to manage buggies and wheelchairs."

The petition describes the junction as "an accident waiting to happen" and says families with pushchairs, wheelchair users and those with mobility issues are "effectively unable to cross safely at all".

Campaigners are calling on Trafford Council to:

  • Install a controlled pedestrian crossing
  • Add dropped kerbs on all sides of the junction
  • Review and adjust traffic light timing to allow pedestrians time to cross safely
  • Carry out a full safety assessment of the junction

The issue had previously been raised with Trafford Council by Cllr Nathan Evans, who represents the Hale Barns & Timperley South ward, but campaigners say the authority indicated it was not a priority because of the lack of recorded collisions at the junction.

The petition had reached 917 verified signatures at the time of writing.
