Oldfield Brow Primary School to double in size after Council approves £4.5m expansion

Oldfield Brow Primary School is to double in size after a £4.5m expansion plan was given the go-ahead by Trafford Council last night.

The expansion, which will result in the Taylor Road school admitting a maximum of 420 pupils by 2020, will see it switch to a two-form entry system from September 2016. The expansion will be phased over seven years.

To accommodate the extra pupils, eight new classrooms and a new larger school kitchen will be built, and there will also be extensions to the school hall, two infant classrooms, playground and two further specialist spaces. An additional parking area will also be created.

The 4,311 sq ft expansion was itself proposed by Trafford Council in line with its duty to ensure sufficient school places within the area.

In the 2014 admissions round, it was found that there were insufficient places in the Altrincham area. Thirty additional places were created through the expansion of Bowdon C.E. Primary School, but the council was required to find an extra 45 places as an emergency measure.

Thirty of these were provided in temporary accommodation at Oldfield Brow for the September 2014 intake, with temporary space for an additional 30 this September.

But in order to meet the continuing demand for places, the permanent physical expansion of the school was proposed and last night ratified by the Council’s executive.

Building work to extend the current school is set to begin in the Easter holidays next month. A school spokesperson told Altrincham Today that the Council’s decision was “brilliant for the school”.

In its most recent Ofsted inspection, Oldfield Brow Primary School was rated Outstanding. It takes in children from three years to 11.
