British Transport Police officers were called out yesterday after two children as young as 10 were seen deliberately leaving metal railway fixings on the main Altrincham line.
The pair, thought to be aged between 10 and 12, were seen trespassing on the line and placing metal railway fixings on the track yesterday afternoon.
Officers from GMP Trafford South and British Transport Police (BTP) attended the incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon.
BTP officers removed the fixings that had been left on the track, while GMP officers were known to have pursued the youths at Altrincham tram station although it’s not yet known if the pair were caught.
Network Rail, which manages Britain’s track system, reported recently that over the past 10 years, almost 170 young people have been killed while trespassing on railways.
The majority (72%) were hit by a train, a further 17% were electrocuted, while others fell from structures or trains.
