Local Elections: The Greens complete takeover of Altrincham as Labour wins overall control of Trafford Council

The Green Party completed their takeover of Altrincham in last night’s Local Elections as Labour won overall control of Trafford Council for the first time in over 15 years.

The Green Party completed their takeover of Altrincham in last night’s Local Elections as Labour won overall control of Trafford Council for the first time in over 15 years.

The Greens, who won two seats in last year’s local elections, completed a full set last night when Michael Welton romped to a decisive victory to ensure a gain from the Conservatives.

On a night when overall turnout was 39.5%, the Liberal Democrats gained both Timperley and Village from the Conservatives while Labour gained Broadheath from the Tories.

The Conservatives held on to Bowdon, Hale Barns and Hale Central.

Council leader Andrew Western, who has run the borough as a minority administration for the past year, called it a “fantastic result”.

“It is a fantastic result for us, especially the gains in Brooklands and Ashton upon Mersey. All the candidates did an amazing job. Tonight’s result show just how much the local Conservative group has lost its way.”

Former leader Sean Anstee, who was at the helm of the Conservative-led administration until last May, described it as a “very painful night”.

He added to the MEN: “Not just for the party as a whole, but for those dedicated and hardworking councillors who have served the community for a number of years, but lost out tonight. I don’t think they deserved that.”

Green Party leader Geraldine Coggins said: “It proves that residents are pleased with the work we have been doing  – and the difference a Green councillor can make in the town.”

Across the whole of Trafford, Labour now holds 36 seats, the Conservatives 20, the Liberal Democrats four and the Greens three.
