Timperley Sports Club has opened its new floodlights after raising £38,000 from members.

The Stockport Road club has described the replacement lights – the first 500Lux lights at any club in the region – as a “game-changer for national league hockey in the region”.

The project kicks off the start of the next phase of development at the club that will include the replacement of its two artificial turf sports pitches, improvements to access and parking and improvements to its clubhouse over the next three years.

The club spent £100,000 replacing its cricket square and installing an improved drainage system in 2017/18.

The new floodlights were officially opened by Cllr Jan Baugh, Executive Lead for Culture and Leisure, Trafford Council and Chris Reece, Vice President of England Hockey as part of day to the opening weekend of the National League hockey season.

For the first time, Timperley Hockey has both its women’s and men’s 1st XIs playing in the Conference North following the men’s promotion last season.

Nick Burnett, President of Timperley Sports Club, said: “As well as investing in improved lighting for our community, school and club users of our artificial pitches, the new lights meet the requirements to play evening matches for our national league hockey.”

Cllr Jane Baugh said: “It’s fantastic to see how Timperley Sports Club has developed its facilities over the last 30 years and offer some of the best facilities in the region to members, our local residents, schools and community groups.”

Founded in 1877 as Timperley Cricket Club, the club now offers cricket, hockey, junior football and lacrosse, and has over 1,100 members.
