The government has confirmed it is hoping to reopen gyms and leisure facilities “in mid-July”.

Leisure facilities were excluded from the list of businesses which were today given the go-ahead to reopen from Saturday July 4th.

But Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, has since confirmed that gyms and leisure facilities will not be far behind.

He tweeted: “Many people keen to hit the gym and keeping Britain fit is key in Covid battle.

“We’ve made lots of progress and I know steps businesses have taken to make their spaces and equipment safe.

“Subject to public health, our aspiration is to reopen gyms & leisure facilities in mid-July.”

Total Fitness – which has an Altrincham gym – has already outlined some of the measures it will be taking once it reopens.
