An 18-year-old has been found in possession of a knife in Altrincham after stop and search powers were extended in the wake of the Goose Green stabbing yesterday.
Investigations are continuing in the town centre after Rico Burton, 31, was stabbed to death in the early hours of yesterday morning. Two males have been arrested in connection with that incident.
Since 3pm yesterday, police have been granted additional powers under Section 60, which under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 allows officers to conduct ‘no suspicion’ stop and searches for offensive weapons.
These temporary powers, which cover a large part of the town centre, will be granted until 3am on Tuesday morning, although this time period may be extended.
A statement from Greater Manchester Police read: “We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern, however, we use these powers when receiving intelligence that there is an increased risk of violence in the areas outlined.
“Our priority is to keep the public safe and you will see an increased amount of officers patrolling the area over this week.”
The extended powers have already seen a knife found during the search of an 18-year-old.
Police said the male had been arrested and taken into custody.
