A new 30-home social housing development in Timperley, which is set to be completed in April, is to be named after Cllr Ray Bowker.
Work is underway on the Trafford Housing Trust and Trafford Council project that will see 20 one-bed and 10 two-bed apartments built on previously dormant land off Carrfield Avenue.
The development, the first to be built from the Trafford Affordable Housing Fund which was set up to support the building of social housing, will be named Bowker Court in tribute to Cllr Bowker, who died aged 83 in January.
The lifelong Timperley resident and former Mayor was first elected to the Charter Council of Trafford in 1973 and was heavily involved in the Carrfield Avenue project from its beginnings.
Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Housing and Regeneration, Cllr James Wright, the Council’s Housing strategy and Growth Manager Caroline Siddall, and Trafford Housing Trust’s Development Director Graeme Scott were given a tour of the site this week.
Scott said: “Trafford Housing Trust’s partnership with Trafford Council and the resulting development at Carrfield Avenue is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by working together. We very much hope that by continuing to do so we will deliver considerably more much-needed social housing throughout the borough.”
Cllr Wright said: “I am delighted to see the progress that has been made on building work at Bowker Court. These are the first new social housing units to be built in Trafford for over a decade and we’re very proud that they have been funded from the Council’s Affordable Housing Fund.”
The 30 units at Bowker Court are for social rent and are being built by contractor Mears New Homes on behalf of Trafford Housing Trust and Trafford Council. .
