Residents say plans for Islamic prayer and education centre in Timperley would cause "parking misery"

The church was originally opened in 1972.

Local residents say the proposed conversion of a former church in Timperley into an Islamic prayer and education centre would cause "parking misery".

A planning application submitted to Trafford Council would see the Woodlands United Reformed Church on Woodlands Parkway converted into a place of worship for the Ismaili Muslim community.

The church was originally opened in 1972 and was used as a church and community space until last year, when the building was sold for £1,425,000.

Now a planning application, submitted by Manchester architects Atelier MB on behalf of Standard Corporation Ltd, includes details of a "modest extension and refurbishment".

These include building a new extension in a courtyard and the reconfiguring of the interior, the installation of a raised roof over the existing prayer hall, and the addition of disabled parking spaces to make 20 spaces in total.

Local residents met to discuss the proposal at a meeting held at the LMRCA Club by Navigation Road Metrolink last evening.

Twenty five representations have also been made on Trafford Council's planning portal, all of which are objecting to the plans.

One local resident, living on Greenway Road, said: "Woodlands Parkway is a narrow road as it is without the excessive numbers of cars that would visit this site and cause parking misery for the local residents and traffic frustration for the local community."

Another, from Thorsby Road, said: "The provision of just 20 parking spaces including 3 disabled spaces would appear to be totally inadequate for the size of the potential congregation and this will lead to an overspill into the local roads."

And a resident on Ladybrook Avenue added: "I along with many other local people have genuine concerns on the negative impact on our community.

"This will bring in more traffic in an already congested area. The extra traffic would be a real danger to local school children with several nearby schools and children in high numbers walking past this building daily."

We've attempted to contact the Altrincham and Hale Muslim Association for their comments.

The full planning application can be found on Trafford's planning portal under the reference number 112429.
