Discover Altrincham’s history with newly expanded programme of guided tours

There will be an expanded programme of guided history tours around Altrincham this summer.

There will be an expanded programme of guided history tours around Altrincham this summer.

Manchester Guided Tours, which organises the tours, have expanded their programme of specialist guided walks in the town, with monthly walks running from May to September.

Beginning by the clock tower in front of Altrincham’s new interchange, the 90-minute walks promise to give a fascinating insight into Altrincham’s history, with tales of “gardeners, bankers, an emperor, an artist, the Old Market Place and the ‘bravest little street in England’”.

Days and times have been varied to make the walks accessible to as many people as possible, with the full programme as follows: Saturday 9th May, Friday 5th June, Saturday 18th July, Sunday 23rd August and Sunday 27th September.

Manchester Guided Tours have also recently operated their first Discover Historic Altrincham walk for a private group, booked by a local family celebrating a special occasion.

Any local families or businesses interested in booking a similar private walk in Altrincham should contact the guides direct: Pauline Lloyd (07723 503702 or pauline.lloyd261@btinteret.com) or Jean Bailo (07812 129754 or jeanbailo@yahoo.co.uk).

The guides said: “For our summer series we have decided to focus our attention on Altrincham town centre. The walk is a great source of information for anyone, from long-term residents to recent newcomers, and we look forward to welcoming as many people as possible on our walks this year.”

Joan Scott, chair of the Altrincham Forward People Group, added: “We’re delighted to have this series of Discover Historic Altrincham walks taking place over the spring and summer months. They offer a great opportunity to delve into the history of our town, and to find out more about its rich heritage.”
