One of Agatha Christie’s lesser known murder mystery plays opens at the Altrincham Garrick on Monday 29th January.
Go Back for Murder, which will run until Saturday 3rd February, was adapted by the Queen of Crime in 1960 from her earlier book, Five Little Pigs, in which Hercule Poirot set out to unravel the mystery presented by pretty young Carla Le Marchant.
But in the stage version, Poirot is written out, and Carla herself seeks to find out ‘whodunnit’, helped by young lawyer Justin Fogg.
‘Go Back for Murder’ is the complex story of a murder revisited years after the supposed murderer has been found guilty and hanged. So, we know who did it and how… or we think we do, until the convicted woman’s daughter returns from Canada to rake over the coals and uncover the truth.
An unusual take on the traditional murder mystery, the action of the play slips seamlessly from past to present, examining the danger of relying on personal testimony warped by time, prejudice and perception. By studying each suspect’s testimony, and the various inconsistencies between them, the drama arrives at a disturbing and terrible truth.
