Alan Bennett's celebrated play, The History Boys, will open the new Altrincham Garrick season next week.
Directed by Su Mowat, the production will run from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st September, bringing to life one of the most acclaimed British plays of the last two decades.
Set in the 1980s, The History Boys follows a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-form students as they navigate the trials of adolescence in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university.
At the heart of the story is a battle of wits between their unconventional and maverick English teacher, who believes in the transformative power of education, and a sharp, young supply teacher with a more pragmatic approach.
Overseeing the chaos is the school's headmaster, whose obsession with results and league tables adds fuel to the staffroom rivalry and the students' rebellious energy.
Through its blend of humour, wit and reflections on the purpose of education, The History Boys poses universal questions about the nature of history and its teaching, all while offering a sharp commentary on the education system that remains relevant today.
Although the students' A Levels may be behind them, their real journey of learning and self-discovery is only just beginning.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, The History Boys first premiered at the National Theatre in 2004, where it was met with rave reviews and quickly became a sell-out sensation.
Hailed as "one of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written", the production went on to win over 30 major awards, including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play.
In 2006 it also became a popular feature film starring Richard Griffiths, Dominic Cooper and James Corden.
Tickets for the performance at the Garrick are available now online here or by calling 0161 928 1677.
