Oppenheimer, exploring the extraordinary life of the man behind the atomic bomb, lands at Altrincham Garrick

It opens next Monday and runs all week.

The Garrick cast for Oppenheimer

A stage adaptation of Oppenheimer is coming to the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse next week.

Directed by John Cunningham from a gripping historical drama by Tom Morton-Smith, this powerful production explores the extraordinary life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the development of the atomic bomb.

A film version was one of the most acclaimed blockbuster films of 2024, winning Best Picture at last year's Oscars.

Not just a story of scientific discovery, Oppenheimer is also a deeply human drama about ambition, power and the ethical dilemmas of groundbreaking innovation.

The play follows Oppenheimer’s transformation from a brilliant but socially awkward physicist to a leader at the heart of the Manhattan Project, grappling with the consequences of his work.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the play opens in 1939 as the U.S. government rushes to develop the atomic bomb before its enemies. As Oppenheimer leads a team of scientists at Los Alamos, the urgency of war collides with the devastating reality of their creation.

Originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2015, Oppenheimer offers a thought-provoking look at the responsibility of science, the ethics of technological advancement, and the unintended consequences of human ambition.

The Garrick's version opens on Monday and runs to Saturday 1st March.
