The Green Room is now one of the longest standing independent venues in the area. We spoke to co-owner Anthony Prophet…
ALTRINCHAM TODAY: Congratulations on 15 years in Altrincham – you must be one of the longest-standing bars around?
ANTHONY PROPHET: The Green Room is now certainly one of the longest established independent venues in Altrincham town centre – we’ve been a firm favourite since 2007. We have had live bands performing every Thursday, Friday and Saturday all that time – that’s almost 2,500 live performances since we opened the doors.
AT: The Green Room is renowned for its atmosphere and you’ve had some great live acts down to perform over the years. Who have been the standouts for you?
AP: We have had some unbelievable musical performances over the years, not just on stage but also outside in Goose Green at one of the many summer festivals that have been hosted here over the years.
A stand-out band that’s always being requested is The Henry Revue Band. They have been a mainstay of ours for over a decade, entertaining Altrincham with their Jamaican reggae beats.
We’ve also played host to a number of well-known original artists and music producers, for example Chris Helme, frontman of The Seahorses, has performed a number of times alongside Mark Morriss of the Bluetones, Nigel Clark from Dodgy and other well-known 90s frontmen.
You will also see Mark Coyle, the legendary producer of Oasis debut album Definitely Maybe, performing a number of times each year, which is always a great night and a real crowd pleaser for indie music fans.
AT: Goose Green is a great night-time destination – almost a village within a town. How has it changed during the time you’ve been there?
AP: Goose Green has become a real destination for a night out in Altrincham town centre. Over the last six years since the redevelopment of the area, it’s clear that people just love the outdoor space and the option to sit in a courtyard style environment as well as having fabulous indoor venues.
AT: To anyone who may not have been down for a while, can you bring people up to speed with what they can expect?
AP: The Green Room will be sticking to what we do best – which is fabulous live entertainment, in the heart of Altrincham town centre. We have a very well supported open mic night every Thursday from 8pm hosted by a number of hugely talented locally based artists.
Then there’s live music on stage on Fridays from 10 pm, and a double bill every Saturday with music in the Green Room from 7pm and then on stage from 10pm right through till 1am.
