A crowd of 1,200 turned up to watch a charity match between St Ambrose College and Altrincham Kersal rugby colts in memory of former teacher Ged Stone.
Ged, the former head of physics at the Hale Barns school and coach at Kersal, died last year after a battle with cancer.
Friends of his oldest son, Luke, arranged a charity under-15s match aimed at raising £1,000 for The Christie and Cancer Research – but with the bumper crowd in attendance at Stelfox Lane in Timperley, they actually raised a total of £2,239.
Organiser Nick Tumelty, who is raising Luke, said: “It was a great turnout befitting how highly both the college and club regarded Mr Stone.”
Fellow organiser Patrick Kearns added: “It was fitting that the result was a 10–10 draw. Mr Stone would have wanted both teams to play to win and both teams did, but the draw was the fairest result and on this occasion it really was about taking part rather than winning or losing.”
Luke, who with his younger brother Callum has also been leading other fundraising efforts, said: “Dad would have been proud of both teams and, just like everyone in our family very thankful, for their support.”
