No decision has yet been taken about whether Greater Manchester should move into England’s highest level of Covid restrictions, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed.

Hancock has told the House of Commons this morning that discussions with local leaders, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, were ongoing.

He said: “Discussions are ongoing with local leaders from moving from high to very high.

“No further decisions have yet been made but we need to make rapid progress.

A move into the Tier 3 alert level would force pubs and bars to close across Altrincham, unless they also serve main meals, as well as a series of other tightening measures.

Hancock added that the discussions also covered what financial support would be available for affected businesses.
