A Trafford councillor described as "a champion of young people" has died following a short illness.
Cllr Denise Western, who had represented Broadheath ward since 2012, passed away peacefully this morning, Trafford Council confirmed. She was the mother of Andrew Western, former Trafford Council leader and now MP for Stretford and Urmston.
Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Tom Ross, led the tributes in a post on X, saying: "Such very sad news today. Denise was a wonderful person, great colleague and supportive friend to all our group members. May she rest in peace, my thoughts are with Andrew Western and his family at this time."
MP Andrew Western replied to the tribute, thanking Cllr Ross and adding that his mother "loved you all".
During her time as a councillor, Cllr Western - a mother of five - held several key positions, including Chair of Trafford Council's Children's Scrutiny Committee. Trafford Labour described her as someone who "ensured their voices were heard" when it came to children and young people's issues.
The council announced her passing in an official statement, saying: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Councillor Denise Western, who died peacefully this morning following a short illness. Our deepest sympathies are with Denise's family and friends at this sad time."

Trafford Labour added: "It is with great sadness that we have to announced that our good friend and Trafford Labour colleague, Cllr Denise Western, died peacefully this morning after a short illness.
"Denise was first elected as a councillor for Broadheath in May 2012 and we know local residents and community groups will be saddened by this news.
"She held many roles during her time as a local councillor, including as Chair of Trafford Council's Children's Scrutiny Committee.
"Denise was a champion of children and young people and ensured their voices were heard.
"Our thoughts are with Denise's family at this time."
