Trafford's Green Party has confirmed Hale resident Orla Weir as their candidate for the Hale ward seat in May's local elections, following Hannah Spencer's historic by-election victory last week.
Spencer made national headlines last week when she became the first Green Party candidate ever to win a Westminster by-election, securing the Gorton and Denton seat with 14,980 votes - nearly 41% of the total - and a majority of over 4,400 votes.
The 34-year-old plumber, who has represented Hale on Trafford Council since 2023, is now the Green Party's fifth MP and their first to represent a northern English constituency.
Weir is not a new face in Hale politics. She stood as the Green candidate in November's Hale by-election and says she is now ready to build on that momentum ahead of May's contest.
"Hannah has done a fantastic job as Hale councillor, speaking up for everyone in our community," Weir said. "People tell us they appreciate the hard work our Green councillors and the team do here in Hale. Our team has a track record of listening and getting things done for local residents."

Spencer's departure for Westminster also triggers a change at the top of the Green group on Trafford Council.
Altrincham councillor Geraldine Coggins will resume the role of group leader - a position she has held previously - after a break of several years.
Coggins paid tribute to Spencer's tenure: "Since her election in 2023, she has been a passionate and energetic campaigner, working tirelessly for people in Hale, speaking up for those who are overlooked. She is a fierce advocate for women and girls and all marginalised people."
Looking ahead, Coggins expressed confidence ahead of what she described as a significant moment for the party. "The Green Party are looking forward to making gains in the May local elections across Trafford," she said.
