Manchester is the most liveable city in the UK, according to a major annual survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The global league table ranks 140 cities on a range of factors, including political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare.

Manchester rose 16 places to 35th, the biggest improvement of any European city.

It is now 13 places ahead of London, the biggest gap between the two cities since the survey began two decades ago, while New York comes in at 57th.

The EIU said Manchester had shown “resilience in the face of adversity” in the wake of the 2017 Manchester Arena terrorism attack.

The survey had been criticised last year for demoting Manchester eight places after the May 22nd attack.

For the first time in this survey’s history, Austria’s capital Vienna tops the table with an almost perfect overall score of 99.1%.

Melbourne, which had ranked top for seven years running, dropped down to second, with Osaka, Calgary, Sydney, Vancouver, Tokyo, Toronto, Copenhagen and Adelaide making up the top 10.

Damascus in Syria, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Lagos in Nigeria are the three lowest ranked cities.
