Busy Altrincham junction set for major changes with new rain garden and one-way system

Work is due to begin imminently.

A busy Altrincham junction is set for major changes with the installation of an eco-friendly rain garden and new one-way system.

The corner where Groby Road, Bentinck Road and Regent Road meet will provide the location for Altrincham's latest rain garden as a means to improve drainage and capture rain and surface water, helping to prevent flooding in the town centre.

It will join existing rain gardens already established on Regent Road and Market Street, featuring carefully selected flowers and planting designed to boost the local environment and biodiversity.

Meanwhile, Bentinck Road is set to become one-way on a trial basis to address longstanding traffic concerns.

It's a response to local concerns about the road's width and heavy traffic volumes making two-way travel problematic.

The trial will apply from just north of Sheiling Court to the junction with Groby Road, with traffic flowing towards Groby Road.

Work on the externally funded rain garden project is scheduled to begin imminently, with work completed by the end of August. The improvements will also include a new pedestrian crossing point on Regent Road at the junction with Bentinck Road and Groby Road.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said: "The public realm improvement works are continuing the transformation of Altrincham to make the town an even better destination in which to live, work and shop.

"The new rain garden will be a superb asset to this part of the town and will help us provide and environmentally friendly solution for surplus rainwater.

"We aim to keep disruption to residents to a minimum and access will be maintained to all properties during the works. However, there will be the need for some limited road closures to complete the rain garden and residents will be notified in advance."

Residents affected by the one-way trial will receive specific information about the changes.
