Captain Edward Kinder Bradbury, the only Altrincham-born recipient of the Victoria Cross from World War One, will receive a special tribute at the Remembrance Day service in Stretford on Sunday.
Captain Bradbury was called the “bravest of them all” for the incredible display of courage under fire during the battle of Nery in 1914.
His remarkable bravery came despite the loss of both legs and he subsequently succumbed to his injuries. He posthumously received the Victoria Cross but his deeds did not receive proper recognition until he was honoured in his home town in September.
And at Stretford War Memorial on Sunday, soldiers from the Royal Artillery will pay tribute to Captain Bradbury.
Trafford Council Leader Sean Anstee said: “To give your life in service for your country is an act of complete selflessness. The sacrifice that these men and women make must never be forgotten. I am proud that each year our borough stands together and honours those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The extra significance of the centenary commemorations has captured the nation and to be able to pay specific tribute to one of our own really is humbling.”
