Here’s a first look at Altrincham’s new £19million interchange, which opened today.
The fully integrated transport hub was finally unveiled at 7am, 21 months after work began to upgrade the station that was originally built in 1881.
The new interchange, which was completed by Laing O’Rourke, includes a larger, modern concourse, improved links between bus, train and tram services, enhanced CCTV and passenger information systems, and a new integrated ticket office within the original Victorian station building.
Work to prepare for the redevelopment included the demolition in May 2012 of the disused footbridge over Stamford New Road.
Details about an official opening ceremony for the interchange are expected to be announced soon.
Transport for Greater Manchester, which has overseen the project, said that work on the lifts is still ongoing, and advised passengers to use the stairs until further notice.
A dedicated cycle hub, which will provide secure, covered cycle parking for more than 50 bikes, is also unfinished.
The ticket office will be open between 6.40am and 8.20pm from Monday to Friday, 7.10am to 8.20pm on Saturdays and between 9.20am and 4.50pm on Sundays.
