Conservatives’ Graham Brady retains Altrincham and Sale West with increased majority

Conservative candidate Graham Brady has retained Altrincham and Sale West with an increased majority of 13,290.

Brady, who has been MP in the constituency since 1997, polled 26,771 votes, 53% of the vote and up 4% of his performance in 2010.

As elsewhere in the country, Jane Brophy of the Liberal Democrats saw her share of the vote sink by 17.1%, with just 4,235 votes.

Labour candidate James Wright claimed second place behind Brady with 13,481 votes, or 26.7%.

UKIP candidate Chris Frost came fourth with 4,047 votes, with Nick Robertson-Brown of the Greens in last place on 1,983 votes.

Brady said: “It is a huge privilege to represent my home town and party as I have for the past 18 years and for the people of Altrincham and Sale to have renewed that trust in me means a great deal.

“I will endeavour to justify that trust by continuing to work hard for the people in my constituency.

“We have some very precious things in Trafford. The quality of our schools is the best in the country. We need to protect our outstanding grammar schools and high schools, but we also need to progress and make them even better.

“We are fortunate to have some superb health services locally, with the new Altrincham Hospital opening just last week. We also have one of the best acute hospitals in the country on our doorstep in Wythenshawe, and I will be working to maintain its position as a major trauma centre.

“In Altrincham in particular, we’ve been able to see a turnaround in the town centre, including the regeneration of the market area. More people now see the town as a great venue to shop and eat out.

“We need to keep that momentum going and restore pride to our town centre.”

The turnout was 70.2%, up from 69.3% in 2010.
